  The Boston Red Sox have placed first baseman Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day disabled list and activated third baseman Mike Lowell from the DL. Youkilis suffered a right thumb injury in the first inning of Monday's 6-5 loss to Cleveland and a Boston newspaper said an MRI exam revealed a torn muscle. The 31-year-old is hitting .307 with 19 homers and 62 RBI, an offensive anchor for a Red Sox club which has seen virtually all its starters on the disabled list at one time this season. Lowell had been out of the lineup since June 22, hampered with a strained right hip, but he belted a two-run homer in Tuesdays' win over Cleveland.
