Outside of Tampa Bay, it might have seemed like the Rays’ march to the 2008 World Series was a bit of a fluke, considering they finished 19 games behind the Yankees in 2009. But inside the clubhouse at Tropicana Field, 2009 is most definitely seen as the fluke season. This is the year the Rays are set on proving that. They’ve outscored...

Adrian Gonzalez is the Padres’ only reliable bat, but they keep winning. The American League East has three teams—the Rays, Yankees and Red Sox—in the top 10 of this week’s power poll. That’s not even the least bit surprising. That the National League West can make the same claim, though, is at least a little bit...

Their sub-.300 days didn’t intersect, but they weren’t far apart. Hard to imagine that Joe Mauer, a career .327 hitter entering the season, and Albert Pujols, a career .334 hitter entering 2010, would find themselves hovering in the upper .200s at any point in July. And after watching their performances over the past week or so, it’s...

In their first 12 seasons, the Rays owned the majors’ best record for just more than a month. Total. Those losing ways are history, of course. Tampa Bay has been one of the majors’ top teams for going on three seasons. Wade Davis hasn’t won a game in June. This season, in fact, the Rays had the majors’ best record for more...

Seven points about the Roy Oswalt trade to the Phillies: 1. This is bad news for the Cardinals, Reds and any other club thinking wild card. The Phillies already had closed to 3 1/2 games of the division-leading Braves and within 2 1/2 games of the wild-card leading Giants on the strength of a seven-game winning streak that was fueled by an offensive...

Down to their final outs in their respective games on Saturday, the Phillies and Red Sox conjured some late-game magic to stun their opponents and trim their division deficits.

Ubaldo Jimenez is halfway to 30 wins. Miguel Cabrera is poised to make a serious run at the Triple Crown. No-hitters are being pitched at a near-record pace. But the No. 1 reason to look forward to baseball’s second half, which begins with seven games Thursday, has nothing to do with individual glory. It is all about the pennant races, which...

Drew Storen was on the phone last fall, not long after he completed his dominating (2-0, 0.66 ERA, 4 saves) spin through the Arizona Fall League. Drew Storen joins the Nats bullpen. Storen, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2009 draft, talked about how he saw his Washington Nationals as a franchise on the rise, and he talked about building on his...
