  Residents remain nervous in the central Nigerian city of Jos, two days after 500 people were killed in surrounding villages. The United Nations, the US and human rights groups have called on the Nigerian government to investigate and prosecute those involved in renewed violence between Muslims and Christians in central Nigeria. They have also urged Nigeria to assure the residents' security. However, reports have emerged that the governor of Plateau State, warned the army of possible attacks, but was ignored. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from Jos (10 Mar 2010).

  A group of Nigerians armed with guns, machetes and spears has killed hundreds of people in villages near the central city of Jos. Local villagers - predominantly Christian - blame Muslim herdsmen for the attack. Clashes between the two communities are not uncommon due to a historical feud over control for the region's fertile farmland. Following the attack, the government has deployed thousands of troops to secure the region, which has been put on high alert for fears of reprisal ambushes.   The Quran (Arabic: ??????? al-quran, literally the recitation; also sometimes transliterated as Quran, Quran, Koran, Alcoran or Al-Quran) is the central religious text of Islam.
